School Readiness Programme
Your child will be in Primary 1 soon! You want your child to walk in feeling ready — not overwhelmed.
The step from kindergarten to primary school is one of the biggest transitions in your child's life. It's not just about knowing letters and numbers. It's about being able to sit through a lesson, follow instructions, manage their own things, and make friends in a room full of strangers. If you're wondering whether your child is ready for all of that — you're not alone, and this programme exists for exactly that question.
What your child gains in 4–6 weeks.
By the end of this programme, your child will walk into Primary 1 with a set of skills most children are expected to have but rarely explicitly taught.
They'll know how to listen to a teacher, follow multi-step instructions, and manage transitions between activities without falling apart. They'll be able to sit through a group lesson and actually participate — not just endure it. They'll have the early literacy and fine motor foundations they need to engage with classroom work from day one.
But more importantly, they'll have confidence. The kind that comes from having practised all of this in a small, safe group before it counted. Your child won't be learning the rules of school on the first day of school. They'll already know them.
And for you — less anxiety about September. Less guesswork about whether your child is "ready enough." A clear sense of where they stand and what to keep working on at home.
A focused programme built around the skills school actually requires.
This is a 4 to 6 week programme designed specifically for children aged 4–5 preparing to start Primary 1. Small groups of up to 6 children — large enough to practise real social dynamics, small enough for every child to get individual attention.
We cover the things that actually determine whether a child has a smooth first term: following instructions and navigating classroom routines, sitting and focusing in a group setting, early literacy foundations through play-based multisensory activities (phonemic awareness, pre-writing skills, pencil grip), and social-emotional confidence — sharing, turn-taking, managing belongings, and asking for help when stuck.
Everything is taught through guided practice, gentle repetition, and collaborative play. We don't lecture 4-year-olds. We create situations where the skills emerge naturally — and then we name them and reinforce them.
I know what Hong Kong's international and local primary schools expect on day one, because I've been working with these schools for over two decades. This programme is designed around those specific expectations — not a generic "school readiness" checklist.
You'll receive regular progress updates with practical tips to reinforce what we're building at home.
What your child will experience.
Each session blends structured activities with guided play. A typical session might start with a group circle where children practise listening and following instructions — raising a hand, waiting their turn, responding to a teacher's cue.
Then we move into a hands-on activity: a literacy game that builds letter recognition, a fine motor task that strengthens pencil grip, or a collaborative project that requires sharing materials and taking turns.
We always close with a reflection moment — even at this age, children benefit from naming what they did and what they found hard. It builds self-awareness and a vocabulary for their own learning.
The tone is warm, encouraging, and patient. No child is rushed. No child is compared. Every child leaves feeling like they did something they can be proud of.
Is this the right fit?
This is for your family if:
- Your child is aged 4–5 and starting Primary 1 within the next 6 months.
- You want them to feel excited about school rather than anxious.
- You want to know where they stand on the practical and social skills schools expect.
- You'd like targeted preparation rather than hoping kindergarten has covered everything.
This probably isn't the right fit if:
- Your child is significantly younger than 4 or has already started primary school (other Surge programmes may be better suited).
- You're looking for academic acceleration or exam prep — this programme is about readiness, not getting ahead.
"He now expresses himself with confidence."
"It's been wonderful to see my son develop a genuine interest in learning new things at Surgehk with Ms. Diptii. She takes the time to understand his learning needs and plans the curriculum accordingly, which has really helped him grow. The game-based learning approach has improved his patience, communication, and confidence. Ms. Diptii has also been very supportive in preparing him for his primary school interview, helping him express himself with confidence."
— Amee, mother of a 5-year-old
Not sure where to start? That's okay.
The first conversation is just a conversation — 20 minutes, no pressure, no commitment. We'll talk about your child, what's been challenging, and whether Surge is the right fit. Most families leave the call with at least one practical thing to try at home, whether we end up working together or not.
